7 Steps for a DIY Pool Inspection

Small pool issues rarely start as big problems. A tiny leak, a loose fitting, or a small crack can turn into equipment failure, water loss, or structural damage if left unnoticed. When performing your DIY pool inspection be sure to cover each of these 7 steps.

Step 1: Inspect the Pool Water Level

Your pool water level should typically sit at the middle of the skimmer opening. If you find yourself adding water frequently, it may be time to investigate further. If the water level is consistently dropping, it could indicate:

• A leak in the liner or plumbing
• Evaporation (normal in hot weather)
• A problem with the skimmer or return lines

Step 2: Check the Pool Deck and Surrounding Area

These issues can allow water to get behind the pool structure, which can cause long-term damage. Walk around your pool and look for these warning signs:

• Cracks in concrete or pavers
• Loose coping stones
• Uneven surfaces
• Signs of sinking or shifting 

Step 3: Inspect the Pool Liner or Surface

Catching surface damage early can prevent leaks and more expensive resurfacing projects later.  Look closely at the pool’s interior surface and check for:

• Tears or wrinkles in vinyl liners
• Cracks in plaster or gunite
• Rough spots or stains
• Discoloration

Step 4: Check Pool Equipment

If the pump is making new noises or losing pressure, that’s often an early warning sign of a problem. Your pool equipment pad is one of the most important areas when performing an inspection. Look at the pool pump, pool filter, pool heater, salt system (if applicable) and check all PVC pipes and valves. Additionally you will want to check for:

• Water leaks
• Rust
• Cracks in pipes
• Loud or unusual noises
• Air bubbles in the pump basket

Step 5: Inspect the Pool Filter

A good rule of thumb: If pressure is 8–10 PSI higher than normal, it’s time to clean the filter. A dirty or failing filter can cause cloudy water and poor circulation. During your inspection:

• Check the filter pressure gauge
• Look for leaks around the filter tank
• Backwash sand and DE filters if pressure is high
• Clean cartridge filters if needed

Step 6: Test Pool Water Chemistry

Pool water chemistry is very important to the health of your pool. balanced water chemistry prevents; algae growth, equipment corrosion, scale buildup and skin an eye irritation. Use a pool test kit or test strips to check:

• pH levels
• Chlorine
• Alkalinity
• Calcium hardness
• Salt level (if you have a salt system)

Step 7: Check Pool Lights and Safety Features

Safety features are just as important as mechanical equipment. Keep your guests safe and make sure:

• Pool lights are working properly
• GFCI outlets are functioning
• Ladders and handrails are secure
• Pool covers open and close properly
• Gates and fences are secure and self-latching

A quick DIY pool inspection should be done once per month, and a more detailed inspection should be done at the beginning and end of each pool season. Call a pool professional if you notice any of these signs after your DIY inspection:

• Cracks in the pool structure
